Houston, Dallas schools place friendly wager on Astros, Rangers ALCS series

Two Texas elementary schools – one from Dallas, one from Houston – have placed a friendly wager on the outcome of the upcoming American League Championship Series between the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers.

School leaders from Harmony Science Academy-Cypress in northwest Houston and Harmony School of Innovation-Grand Prairie in southwest Dallas made the wager Thursday, Oct. 12 – the morning after the Astros advanced to the ALCS to set up the first-ever postseason showdown with their I-45 rival, the Texas Rangers.

If the Rangers win, students from Harmony Science Academy-Cypress will dress in Rangers shirts or colors to record a video admitting defeat and wishing the Rangers the best of luck in the upcoming World Series.

If Houston wins, students from Harmony School of Innovation-Grand Prairie will do the same for the Astros, who are the current reigning World Series champions.

The wager already has baseball-loving staff members from the campuses engaged in friendly trash talk.

“Congrats to the Rangers for making it to the ALCS for the first time since the Astros joined the American League,” HSA-Cypress assistant principal Cody Blair said. “But may I remind you, you don't make it to seven consecutive LCS series without a little moxie and ‘been there, done that.’”

Both schools are part of Harmony Public Schools, a tuition-free public charter school based in Texas. Unlike traditional Texas public schools that are geographically based around one city or county, Texas public charter schools are curriculum-based and often have schools located in multiple communities across the state. Harmony, for example, operates 60 PreK-12 science academies across Texas, including 16 in Greater Dallas-Fort Worth and 20 across Greater Houston. Harmony also has one online-only campus – Harmony Virtual Academy – that serves students from both Houston and Dallas. Harmony’s curriculum places a heavy focus on STEM skills, Character Education, project-based learning, and college readiness.

Harmony Public Schools is currently accepting applications for the 2023-2024 school year for both students and team members.
