On December 12, 2022, the United States and Mexico commemorated an important milestone: two hundred years of diplomatic relations and mutual recognition. Unfortunately, the anniversary comes at a time where that relationship is descending into a crisis unseen in over a century. The Mexican state is descending into authoritarianism, criminality, and overt anti-Americanism — and federal policymaking in Washington, D.C., is slow to respond to these new realities.
Today, the Texas Public Policy Foundation announced the U.S.-Mexico Policy Summit, which will dive into the state of U.S.-Mexico relations, and how state and federal policy must change to reflect the changing nature of the Mexican state. Featuring panel discussions and guest speakers, this event will include discussions on immigration, border security, drug trafficking, transnational crime, diplomatic relations, and more.
“The importance of the United States’, and specifically Texas’ relationship with Mexico cannot be understated,” said TPPF CEO Greg Sindelar. “We are neighbors with a shared heritage, border, and future. It is time that we face the brutal facts that threaten both of our nations, and that is why I am proud to announce TPPF’s inaugural U.S.-Mexico Policy Summit. By hosting policymakers and holding discussions surrounding the realities on the ground, we can better approach policymaking and national security, acknowledging the importance of that relationship, while also admitting it has changed, and not for the better.
