Houston mourns the loss of a formidable figure who dedicated his life to community service and progress. Laurence J. "Larry" Payne, remembered by many as a civic leader, educator, and a bridge-builder, sadly passed away, leaving a legacy that will inspire generations.
Mayor Sylvester Turner, deeply moved by the loss, paid homage to his friend and collaborator of 30 years. "Larry Payne was an embodiment of leadership and compassion. He guided us through complex initiatives and was instrumental in conflict resolution, especially noted during the challenging times following the murder of George Floyd," Mayor Turner reflected. He lauded Payne's tenacity in chairing the Mayor's Taskforce on Police Reforms, which led to the implementation of 104 broadly accepted reforms, amidst his battle with cancer.
Francis Page Jr, the Publisher of Houston Style Magazine, joined in expressing his condolences. "Larry Payne's departure is a profound loss for Houston. His good-hearted nature and unwavering commitment to our community were unparalleled. We stand with his family in this time of grief," Page stated.
Payne's long-time friend, Pastor Rudy Rasmus, also shared heartfelt words. "Larry was more than a friend; he was a brother in service. From the early days of Bread of Life, he stood by us, sharing our vision of helping the hungry and homeless," Pastor Rasmus reminisced, recalling Payne's unwavering support from the very beginning.
Houston Style Magazine extends its deepest sympathies to the Payne family and all who were touched by Larry's generous spirit. His dedication to Houston's betterment will not be forgotten, and his legacy will continue to be a guiding light for community service and social justice. As we honor Larry Payne's remarkable life and contributions, we invite our readers to reflect on his impact and the indelible mark he left on our city. May his soul rest in peace, and may his family find comfort in the outpouring of love and support from the community he so dearly served.
