Congressman Al Green Secures $1,550,000 in Federal Funding for the City of Houston Sunnyside Park

On Thursday, May 4, 2023, Congressman Al Green will present a symbolic check in the amount of $1,550,000 to the City of Houston for the Sunnyside Park Community Center.

Sunnyside, one of Houston's oldest African American communities, is an economically distressed neighborhood that contends with historic inequities and present-day disparities that dimmish the quality of life of its residents.

The Sunnyside Park Community Center houses a gymnasium and meeting rooms that host recreation programs for people of all ages including youth after-school and summer enrichment programs, as well as senior programs, and free play. It is the site of community meetings and other neighborhood gatherings. Sunnyside residents have identified the repair and, eventual replacement of assets at Sunnyside Park as a top priority for improving their quality of life.

The proposed project will replace the community center gymnasium roof and floor, as well as basketball goals and gymnasium wall padding. Additionally, all four men’s and women’s restrooms in the building will be upgraded. The center is, adjacent to the proposed Sunnyside Solar Farm, which upon completion will be the largest urban solar farm in the Southeast United States. The development of this groundbreaking energy infrastructure project, combined with a revitalized community asset (the gymnasium at Sunnyside Park) would be something a long- underserved community could be proud of for decades to come.

Congressman Al Green and Mayor Sylvester Turner, Houston, Texas

will hold a press conference at the Sunnyside Community Center & Park, 3502 Bellfort Ave., Houston, TX 7705 on Thursday, May 4, 2023 4:00 PM CST.
