State Representative Ron Reynolds is thrilled to extend his heartfelt congratulations to Claude Cummings Jr. on his historic election as the President of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) during the union's 79th convention. Cummings's groundbreaking achievement as the first Black man to assume the esteemed position of CWA President marks a significant milestone in the labor movement.
Cummings brings with him a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to advancing workers' rights. Having served as Vice President of CWA District 6 since 2011, representing more than 45,000 members across Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas, he has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by workers in diverse industries.
Cummings began his union career at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company (now AT&T) in 1973, where he honed his skills as a Frame Attendant and Communications Technician. His exceptional contributions included maintaining critical systems for notable clients such as NASA, showcasing his technical expertise and unwavering dedication.
As President-elect of the CWA, Cummings builds upon his impressive track record, having previously served as President of CWA Local 6222, representing over 8,000 members. Throughout his career, he has consistently shattered barriers, becoming the first Black man elected to these esteemed leadership positions.
