When it comes to advocating for kids in foster care and vital developmental needs across the city of Houston, Dr. Candice Matthews is there with her sleeves rolled up ready to do the work. Ke'Ke: What are the most important attributes of a successful leader in the community?

Dr. Matthews: A successful community leader must possess empathy, the ability to inspire, strong communication skills and pride in their community. Effective leaders are problem solvers who involve all members of their teams. They get people to work together toward a common goal. A successful community leader focus on building effectiveness, the ability to get things done. In fact, a successful community leader possess self-awareness, garner credibility, focus on relationship-building, have a bias for action, exhibit humility, empower others, stay authentic, present themselves as constant and consistent, become role models and are fully present.
