For as long as The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has been active there has always been a method of getting information out about the activities and ongoing events of this world-renowned show. Whether it has been through word of mouth, print, or online, the mission of the Rodeo continues to appeal to many Houstonians and non-Houstonians all over the world. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Magazine Committee’s purpose is to continuously seek to inform the Rodeo membership as well as the general public about the Rodeo's mission which is the active promotion of agriculture, education, entertainment, and Western heritage. To date, the dissemination of this important mission of the Rodeo is partly accomplished through the release of a quarterly print and online magazine titled the “Bowlegged H” Magazine. Since its inception, the Bowlegged H magazine has remained a staple of the Rodeo informing patrons about the accomplishments, committees, events, and scholarships that have been awarded to students. For example, the Bowlegged H magazine was able to report that since 1932, The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has committed more than $ 500 million to Texas youth and education. This important piece of information illustrates the tireless work of The Rodeo and this statement able to be read individuals throughout the country and even the world.
The magazine committee members continuously strive to conduct relevant interviews with a variety of individuals that have proven to be integral in helping to meet the goals of The Rodeo and fostering a growing awareness of the mission of the Rodeo. The magazine committee engages in brainstorming sessions that lead to the identification of special topics and the eventual assignment of these topics to the members, who serve as reporters. The reporters undertake the task of writing a number of articles focused on different and intriguing topics for the Bowlegged H magazine and through a comprehensive selection process articles are selected for publication in the magazine. With the assistance of an editorial board supervisor, a designated reporter writes an original article and then works closely with the editorial board supervisor to edit the article until it is ready for publication. Furthermore, the use of a photographer may or may not be employed depending on the subject matter but in most cases, the inclusion of pictures serves to enhance the impact of the piece. The reporter may also assist with the formal design and layout of the issue, and this ultimately leads to the creation of a publication that heavily promotes membership engagement with the Rodeo.
The current Bowlegged H magazine membership consists of many individuals who have been a part of the committee for several years and these individuals enjoy the time that they dedicate to the release of this publication. There is a high level of commitment and passion that can be observed from the current members of the magazine committee, and this is what new members should seek to possess when they come on board this long
