Birth of a Movement Reception, Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion

Photography by Vicky Pink - The Black Greeks Speak Social Justice and Human Rights Council hosted a screening of the ground breaking documentary Birth of a Movement. It is the story of African American newspaper editor William Monroe Trotter‘s 1915 battle against America’s first blockbuster movie – D.W. Griffith‘s infamous The Birth of a Nation. The Boston editor wanted to have the movie banned for his favorable portrayal of the Ku Klux Klan. After the screening of the documentary, a panel including Jerome Solomon, Yolanda Smith, and Dr. Jenifer Bratter with moderator Dr. Marlon Smith discussed the film. The affair was held in partnership with Baker Ripley, Inc, and the Multicultural Community Relations in Public Affairs, Rice Media Center, and ARUBA.
