New Play Takes on School-to-Prison Pipeline and Overrepresentation of Black Children in Foster Care in ‘Black, White & Sunshine’

August 1-4, 2019

[HOUSTON, TX – April 22nd, 2019 - ] -- Houston Play On Purpose and Playwright Holly Charles announce the debut of the groundbreaking stage play Black, White & Sunshine, which sheds light on the disproportionality of minority children swept into both the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. While various procedures are in place to protect underserved youth, Sunshine exposes how one-size fits all policies and legislation often do a disservice to children of color and those born into less fortunate circumstances.

Showing at Midtown Arts & Theater Center (MATCH – 3400 Main) August 1st- 4th, 2019, HPOP is continuing its mission to raise awareness for worthy causes and injustices which often go unchallenged. Tickets go on sale June 2019 at www.houstonplayonpurpose.com.

This year, HPOP partners with two organizations which have worked tirelessly to disrupt negative social patterns and generational curses associated with minorities in low-income, high risk communities. 8 Million Stories, whose mission is to disrupt the “cradle to prison pipeline” by way of adequate education, vocational training, employment and authentic relationships, has chosen to work with Houston Play On Purpose for a more innovative way to expose and rectify the ineffective system of juvenile detention and rehabilitation. Likewise, respected veteran organization, Child Advocates of Fort Bend, will join HPOP to continue advocating for thousands of misfortunate children by providing resources that are in the best interest of the child’s development and physical and emotional well-being.
