HARRIS COUNTY – Today, Adrian Garcia, former Sheriff and candidate for County Commissioner, Precinct 2, called on Harris County Commissioners to join with Ft. Bend County commissioners in a lawsuit against the Army Corps of Engineers to require the Corps to take action to prevent future flooding of the type we saw in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

“We don’t need to wait for another 51 inches of rain before the Army Corps of Engineers does its job,” said Garcia. “Ft. Bend County just sued the Corps; Harris County should join as a plaintiff in the lawsuit.”

The Corps’ actions caused over 9,000 homes to flood behind Addicks and Barker Reservoirs during Harvey. Risk assessments, planning, funding and corrective measures were needed long before drainage infrastructure became a huge problem rather than a life-saving solution.

Fort Bend County has sued the Corps in part because the Corps didn’t acquire sufficient land to handle the amount of water the Barker reservoir was designed to hold, causing thousands of family homes to flood.

“It is unacceptable for the federal agency and federal funding representatives to ignore major risks to life and property,” said Garcia. “Harris County must step up to force action by the Corps to correct festering problems and protect people who live above and below the two reservoir dams the Corps itself has assessed as “extremely high risk.”
