Commissioner Ellis and Civic Leaders Announce Non-Partisan Campaign Using Billboards to Encourage Voter Registration

Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis, NAACP Houston Branch President Dr. James Douglas, LULAC District Director Alfonso Maldonado, and Lee Vela, Vice President of Public Affairs at Clear Channel Outdoor will launch a public service campaign, using 20 billboards, to encourage voter registration and electoral participation. The billboard space was donated by Clear Channel Outdoor to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Houston Branch, which has partnered with Commissioner Ellis, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) to promote voter registration and civic engagement. The campaign started Aug. 6 and ends Sept. 30. Commissioner Rodney Ellis is the spokesman for a non-partisan voter registration campaign. The event is at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 8106 Homestead at South Hall. Billboard is on east side of Homestead. (Key Map 454H)

A 2018 study of Greater Houston’s civic health by Rice University’s Kinder Institute found that, at minimum, 1 in 5 voting-age citizens are unregistered in Harris County. With Labor Day being the unofficial start of the fall voting season, Commissioner Ellis, NAACP, LULAC and TCRP are urging residents – via 20 billboards in English and Spanish throughout Precinct One – to register and vote during early voting and on Election Day on Nov. 6.
