JUNE 9, 2014 — HOUSTON — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today awarded 70 Texas 4-H members with four-year, $18,000 college scholarships totaling $1.26 million during the Texas 4-H Roundup in College Station, Texas.

One of the oldest Show scholarship programs, Texas 4-H members have received more than 2,200 scholarships since the Show’s first major educational scholarship was awarded in 1957.

"The 4-H motto is ‘to make the best better,’” said Joel Cowley, Show president and CEO. “On behalf of our more than 31,000 volunteers, the Show is proud to contribute to a better future for these very deserving members of Texas 4-H.”

For more than 100 years, Texas 4-H has provided educational opportunities for students all over the state, and since 1932, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has shared in that mission of supporting Texas youth.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo 4-H scholars will attend 19 different colleges across the state, and pursue 39 different majors, from agribusiness to aerospace engineering. For the first time, graduating scholars will receive Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo life memberships to encourage them to continue their relationship with the organization.

In 2014, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has committed more than $23 million to scholarships, research, endowments, calf scramble participants, junior show exhibitors, School Art participants and various educational programs. Of that total, $12.4 million is in the form of scholarships.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a Section 501(c)(3) charity that benefits youth, supports education, and facilitates better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. Since its beginning in 1932, the Show has committed more than $350 million to the youth of Texas.
