(CNN) -- Liverpool is out of the Champions League after failing to defeat Swiss side Basel at Anfield.

Steven Gerrard's stunning free kick set up a frantic finale as Liverpool, down to 10 men, fought back to cancel out Fabian Frei's first half strike.

Lazar Markovic, a halftime substitute, was shown the red card on the hour mark after appearing to lash out at Basel's Behrang Safari.

Locked at 1-1, Jordan Henderson came close to stealing a dramatic winner but the visiting side held out to take second spot in Group B.

Real Madrid, which topped the group with six wins from six, defeated Bulgarian minnow Ludogorets 4-0.
